As part of Netflix’s Tudum 2023 event, the streaming giant announced that the highly anticipated show, the first collaboration between D.B. Weiss and David Benioff since the conclusion of Game of Thrones, will offer viewers a mind-altering experience in early 2024.

The 90-second teaser, available below, offers a tantalizing glimpse into the epic and visually stunning world of 3 Body Problem. If the series lives up to even half of its potential, it has the potential to join the ranks of the best shows on Netflix when it debuts in January.

Based on the groundbreaking book series of the same name by Cixin Liu, 3 Body Problem marks the first foray into television for Benioff and Weiss following the conclusion of their widely-discussed Game of Thrones finale in May 2019. After parting ways with a new Star Wars trilogy, the duo signed an exclusive multi-year deal worth a reported $200 million each with Netflix in August 2019. This series represents their highly anticipated in-house project for the esteemed streaming platform.

But what exactly is 3 Body Problem about? Netflix has shed some light on the awe-inspiring and time-traveling narrative that fans can expect from the show. In a press release, the streaming giant revealed, “A young woman’s fateful decision in 1960s China reverberates across space and time to a group of brilliant scientists in the present day. As the laws of nature unravel before their eyes, five former colleagues reunite to confront the greatest threat in humanity’s history.”

The star-studded ensemble cast of 3 Body Problem includes Jess Hong (Inked), Benedict Wong (Doctor Strange 2), John Bradley (Game of Thrones), Eiza Gonzalez (Extrapolations), Jovan Adepo (Sorry For Your Loss), Alex Sharp (Trial of the Chicago 7), Jonathan Pryce (The Crown), Liam Cunningham (Game of Thrones), and Rosalind Chao (Mulan). Production on the series has recently wrapped up, which is why the show will debut on Netflix in January 2024 instead of its initially rumored late 2023 release.

Benioff and Weiss will serve as showrunners and executive producers on 3 Body Problem, alongside Alexander Woo (True Blood). The series boasts an impressive roster of producers, including Rian Johnson (Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, Star Wars: The Last Jedi), Bernadette Caulfield (Game of Thrones), Brad Pitt (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood), Rosamund Pike (The Wheel of Time), and Lin Qi (San Ti).

Comprising eight one-hour episodes, it remains unclear whether the entire season will drop at once or if it will be released in two parts. Regardless, mark your calendars for the arrival of 3 Body Problem on Netflix in January 2024.

A new study has found that following five good sleep habits can add nearly five years to a man’s life expectancy and almost 2.5 years to a woman’s life. The study analyzed data from over 172,000 people who answered sleep questionnaires between 2013 and 2018 as part of the National Health Interview Survey. Each of the five healthy sleep habits – falling asleep easily, staying asleep, getting seven to eight hours of sleep, waking up rested, and foregoing sleep medication – was assigned a number, and people were scored on how many of the five habits they had. Compared to individuals who had zero to one favorable sleep factors, those who had all five were 30% less likely to die for any reason, 21% less likely to die from cardiovascular disease, 19% less likely to die from cancer, and 40% less likely to die of causes other than heart disease or cancer.

Men who followed all five of the healthy sleep habits had a life expectancy that was 4.7 years greater than people who had none or only one of the five elements of low-risk sleep. The impact of healthy sleep habits was much lower for women: those who followed all five sleep habits gained 2.4 years compared with those who did none or only one.

One potential reason for the gender difference could be the difficulty of evaluating women for obstructive sleep apnea, a potentially deadly condition in which breathing stops every few minutes. The more severe the apnea, the greater the risk of coronary artery disease, heart attacks, heart failure, and strokes. “Women with obstructive sleep apnea often get underdiagnosed or misdiagnosed because they may not present with the classic symptoms that we see when we’re evaluating men,” said Dr. Raj Dasgupta, an associate professor of clinical medicine at the University of Southern California’s Keck School of Medicine.

The study suggests that encouraging the maintenance of regular sleep schedules with consistent sleep durations may be an important part of lifestyle recommendations for the prevention of heart disease. “Recent studies have shown irregularity in sleep timing and duration have been linked to metabolic abnormalities and higher cardiovascular disease risk,” said Dasgupta.

To achieve better sleep, individuals need to make sure they get a full seven to eight hours of sleep each night. They also need to have uninterrupted, restful sleep more often than not. That means not waking up during the night or having trouble falling asleep more than two times a week. People also need to feel well-rested at least five days a week when they wake up, and they can’t be using sleep medications to achieve their slumber. It’s important to go to bed at the same time on most nights and get up at the same time most mornings, even on weekends and holidays. Set up a sleep routine, with no blue lights or distractions at least an hour before bedtime. Parents and caregivers can learn these habits and teach them to their children, providing them with a better shot at a longer life, the study said.

“If people have all these ideal sleep behaviors, they are more likely to live longer,” said Dr. Frank Qian, a clinical fellow in medicine at Harvard Medical School and internal medicine resident physician at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston. “If we can improve sleep overall, and identifying sleep disorders is especially important, we may be able to prevent some of this premature mortality,” Qian said.

Two new studies published in the journal Nature have shown that Antarctica’s Thwaites Glacier, known as the “Doomsday Glacier,” is melting rapidly in unexpected ways. The Thwaites Glacier is the size of Florida and is located in West Antarctica. An ice shelf that protrudes out onto the surface of the ocean helps hold the glacier in place, acting as a cork, and defending against sea-level rise. The ice shelf is, however, highly vulnerable to warming oceans. While melting underneath much of the ice shelf is slower than anticipated, deep cracks and “staircase” formations in the ice are melting much faster. As climate change accelerates, the Thwaites Glacier is rapidly changing. Every year it sheds billions of tons of ice into the ocean, contributing about 4% of annual sea-level rise.

The complete collapse of the Thwaites Glacier could lead to sea-level rise of more than two feet, which would devastate coastal communities worldwide. It also acts as a natural dam to the surrounding ice in West Antarctica, and scientists have estimated that global sea-level rise could ultimately be around 10 feet if the Thwaites Glacier collapsed. The ice shelf could disintegrate much sooner than that, causing an unstable, potentially irreversible retreat of the glacier.

The team of US and British scientists from the International Thwaites Glacier Collaboration used a hot water drill to bore a hole nearly 2,000 feet deep into the ice to survey the glacier. The instruments sent down to take measurements included a torpedo-like robot called Icefin. The results of the research revealed that the rate of melting beneath much of the flat part of the ice shelf was lower than expected. A layer of colder, fresher water at the base of the glacier between the ice shelf and the ocean was suppressing the melting. The scientists also found that the underwater glacial landscape was much more complex than anticipated, with staircase-like terraces and crevasses contributing to instabilities in the glacier.

The findings are consistent with a slew of other studies pointing to the rapid melting of the Thwaites Glacier. A 2021 study found that the ice shelf could shatter within the next five years, while last year, scientists warned that the Thwaites Glacier is hanging on “by its fingernails” as the planet warms, with the potential for rapid retreat in the coming years. The new research provides “the missing pieces” to determine exactly how this change is happening, according to Britney Schmidt, an associate professor at Cornell University and a lead author on one of the papers. The research can help make more accurate projections about sea-level rise, which can be used to mitigate climate change and protect coastal communities.

The post Doomsday Glacier is “In Trouble” first appeared on Sevenelles.

Generative AI, based on Large Language Models (LLMs) and transformer neural networks, has been praised for its potential to revolutionize different fields, including the film industry and enterprise software. Ben Thompson of the Stratechery newsletter has declared generative AI advances to be marking “a new epoch in technology.” However, despite the current advancements in AI, experts say that we are still in the early innings of AI applications, and a new “AI arms race” is expected to occur.

The generative AI era could be a precursor to the AI singularity, a point when AI surpasses human intelligence, leading to rapid and exponential advancements in technology. It is unclear when the AI singularity will arrive, with predictions ranging from being soon to in the next century or never. Futurist Ray Kurzweil predicted that it will arrive in 2045 in his 2005 book “The Singularity is Near.”

Expert predictions aside, Vernor Vinge’s prediction could prove closest, stating that “We are on the edge of change comparable to the rise of human life on earth.” An Italian language translation startup, translated, has predicted that the singularity will occur when AI provides “a perfect translation,” a good proxy test for determining the arrival of the singularity. They estimated that the time needed for a perfect machine language translation will occur by the end of this decade, and at that point, the singularity will have arrived.

It is challenging to predict where the singularity begins or what form it will take. It is unlikely to be a single day when any one metric is achieved, and the impact of AI is going to continually increase, with the inevitable peaks and valleys of progress. DeepMind’s AlphaFold, which predicts the folding pattern of virtually every protein, has shown that the tasks AI can accomplish will expand with every advance in AI.

Meta’s “Cicero” AI system recently outperformed people in Diplomacy, a strategic war game that requires an understanding of human interactions, deceptions, and cooperation. Whisper emerged late last year to finally produce fast and reliable voice-to-text transcriptions of conversations.

Despite the potential for AI to be a force for good, there are concerns about AI safety and alignment work, with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman saying that a worst-case scenario for AI is “lights out for all of us.” As AI becomes more advanced and gains the ability to improve itself at an accelerating rate, leading to a point where technological progress exceeds human ability to understand or predict it, it is crucial that we consider the potential consequences of such developments.

What is “Wealth Inequality”?

Wealth inequality refers to the unequal distribution of wealth and assets among individuals or households within a population or a society. It is a measure of the concentration of wealth, often measured by the difference between the rich and the poor, and it highlights disparities in the ownership of resources and opportunities. Wealth inequality can have far-reaching economic, social, and political consequences, including reduced economic mobility, increased poverty, and decreased social stability. In some cases, it can lead to economic and political imbalances and perpetuate cycles of poverty and power.

Wealth Inequality as a Danger Civilization

Wealth inequality can pose risks to a society, but it is difficult to make a blanket statement about whether it is a danger to all civilizations. Excessive wealth inequality can lead to various negative outcomes such as decreased economic mobility, increased poverty, and reduced social stability, which can contribute to societal problems such as reduced trust in institutions, political polarization, and even unrest and conflict. On the other hand, some degree of wealth inequality can be a natural byproduct of a dynamic and growing economy and can provide incentives for hard work and innovation.

It’s important to consider the specific context and circumstances of each society when evaluating the impact of wealth inequality. In general, it is seen as desirable to strive for a society with a more balanced distribution of wealth and opportunities, where everyone has a fair chance to succeed and reach their full potential. However, finding the right balance can be challenging and is often a subject of ongoing debate and discussion.

The History of Wealth Inequality

In the United States, wealth inequality has been a persistent issue throughout its history, but it has fluctuated over time. During the Gilded Age in the late 19th century, wealth inequality reached a high point in the U.S., with a small group of wealthy industrialists and tycoons controlling a large portion of the country’s wealth. After World War II, the country experienced a period of relatively low wealth inequality, known as the “Great Compression,” as the middle class grew and the gap between the rich and poor narrowed. In recent decades, however, wealth inequality has risen again, with the top 1% of households controlling a larger share of the country’s wealth.

Globally, wealth inequality has also been a persistent issue throughout history, but it too has fluctuated over time. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, European colonial powers and the United States dominated the world economy, and wealth was heavily concentrated in the hands of a few wealthy nations and individuals. After World War II, many countries underwent significant economic growth and development, and the global distribution of wealth became more balanced. However, in recent decades, wealth inequality has risen again, with a small group of wealthy individuals and nations controlling an increasing share of global wealth.

It’s important to note that these are general trends, and the specifics of wealth inequality can vary greatly from country to country and region to region.

2023 U.S. Wealth Inequality is VERY High

Wealth inequality in the United States is higher now than it has been in decades. According to various studies, the wealth gap between the rich and the poor in the United States has been growing in recent years, with the top 1% of households now controlling a larger share of the country’s wealth than at any other point in modern history. This has led to increased concern about the potential impacts of wealth inequality on the economy and society, including reduced economic mobility, increased poverty, and reduced social stability.

It’s important to note that wealth inequality has been a persistent issue throughout U.S. history and has fluctuated over time, with periods of both high and low wealth inequality. However, the current level of wealth inequality is widely considered to be among the highest it has been in recent decades.

The Link Between Wealth Inequality and Political Instability

Excessive wealth inequality can potentially lead to political instability, as it can erode trust in institutions, increase polarization, and contribute to social and economic unrest. When wealth is concentrated in the hands of a small portion of the population, it can result in a lack of access to opportunities and resources for a large segment of the population. This can lead to feelings of frustration and dissatisfaction, which can fuel political unrest and instability.

Additionally, when wealth inequality is extreme, it can also undermine the legitimacy of political institutions and the democratic process. Wealthy individuals and corporations with disproportionate economic power can exert influence over the political process and shape policies in their own interests, at the expense of the majority of the population.

However, it’s worth noting that wealth inequality is just one of many factors that can contribute to political instability, and the relationship between wealth inequality and political stability is complex and can vary greatly from country to country. Other factors, such as political institutions, social norms, and economic conditions, can also play a significant role in shaping political stability.

Wealth Inequality and the Rise of Fascism

There is evidence that a rise in wealth inequality can be a contributing factor to the rise of fascism, as well as other forms of authoritarianism. When wealth is concentrated in the hands of a small portion of the population, it can result in a lack of access to opportunities and resources for a large segment of the population, leading to feelings of frustration and dissatisfaction. This, in turn, can create fertile ground for the rise of extremist political movements that promote nationalism, racism, and anti-democratic values.

Historically, the rise of fascism in Europe in the early 20th century was associated with high levels of wealth inequality, as well as social and economic instability. In some cases, fascist leaders exploited these conditions to gain power and implement their regimes, which were characterized by authoritarianism, suppression of dissent, and a concentration of power and wealth in the hands of a small ruling elite.

It’s worth noting that the relationship between wealth inequality and the rise of fascism is complex, and other factors such as political institutions, social norms, and economic conditions can also play a significant role. Wealth inequality can be a contributing factor, but it is not the only cause of the rise of fascist movements.

Link to the Increase in Partisanship in the U.S.

There is evidence that the rise of wealth inequality can contribute to increased partisanship and political polarization in a society. When wealth is concentrated in the hands of a small portion of the population, it can result in a lack of access to opportunities and resources for a large segment of the population, leading to feelings of frustration and dissatisfaction. This can contribute to a sense of social and economic insecurity, which can fuel political polarization and the growth of extreme political movements.

Additionally, when wealth inequality is extreme, it can also undermine trust in political institutions and the democratic process. Wealthy individuals and corporations with disproportionate economic power can exert influence over the political process and shape policies in their own interests, at the expense of the majority of the population. This can create a perception of political corruption and erode trust in the political system, leading to increased partisanship and polarization.

In the United States, there is evidence that the rise of wealth inequality in recent decades has contributed to increased political polarization and partisanship. The country has experienced a growing gap between the rich and poor, as well as a growing concentration of wealth in the hands of a small portion of the population. This has coincided with a growing divide between political parties and an increase in political polarization and partisanship.

Will U.S. Hyper-Partisanship Lead to a Fascist U.S.?

It’s difficult to predict the future, but it is unlikely that hyper-partisanship in the United States will directly lead to a more fascist country. While increased partisanship and political polarization can contribute to social and political instability, and provide a breeding ground for extremist political movements, there are many factors that would need to align in order for a country to become fascist.

Fascism is a political ideology characterized by extreme nationalism, authoritarianism, and suppression of dissent. It requires a concentration of power in the hands of a single leader or ruling elite, as well as the suppression of political opposition and the elimination of individual rights and freedoms. In order for a country to become fascist, these conditions would need to exist, as well as a significant level of support from a substantial portion of the population.

While hyper-partisanship can contribute to social and political instability, and provide a breeding ground for extremist political movements, it is important to recognize that there are many other factors that would need to align in order for a country to become fascist. Additionally, there are also many democratic institutions, norms, and values in the United States that serve as a barrier to the rise of fascism, and a strong commitment to democratic principles among the majority of the population.

The post Wealth Inequality and the Rise of U.S. Fascism first appeared on Sevenelles.

The “Dark Forest Theory” is a scientific explanation for why we haven’t heard from aliens yet. The theory was first proposed by Chinese science fiction writer Liu Cixin in his book “The Three-Body Problem.”

The idea behind the theory is that the universe is like a “dark forest,” where all the intelligent civilizations are like hunters hiding in the trees. These civilizations are aware of each other’s existence, but they are too afraid to make contact because they don’t know what the other civilizations might do.

One reason for this fear is the “Fermi Paradox,” which states that the universe is so big and old that it’s likely that other intelligent life forms have evolved, but we haven’t seen any signs of them. The Dark Forest Theory explains this paradox by saying that these other civilizations are hiding from us and we are hiding from them.

The reason for this is simple: any civilization that makes contact with another civilization risks being destroyed by the other civilization. In the dark forest, any movement may attract dangerous predators. Therefore, it would be safer to stay hidden and avoid any contact.

Another reason why other civilizations might be hiding is because they might not be friendly. They might be hostile and want to conquer or destroy other civilizations. And if they are more advanced than us, they would be able to do so easily.

The Dark Forest Theory also explains why we haven’t received any signals from aliens. They might be using stealth technology to avoid detection. They might also be using encrypted messages that we can’t understand.

The theory also suggests that, since the universe is so big and old, some civilizations may have already come and gone. They might have risen and fallen before we even existed. And if that’s the case, we might never know about them.

In conclusion, the Dark Forest Theory is a scientific explanation for why we haven’t heard from aliens yet. According to this theory, other intelligent civilizations are hiding from us and we are hiding from them because of the fear of being destroyed or conquered. The theory also explains the Fermi Paradox by saying that other civilizations might be using stealth technology or encrypted messages to avoid detection. The theory is a reminder that the universe is vast and mysterious, and we might never know everything about it.

“The Three-Body Problem” is a science fiction novel written by Chinese author Liu Cixin. The novel is set in the present day and centers around the discovery of a planet called Trisolaris that is in a three-body orbit with its sun. The novel explores the implications of this discovery and the impact it has on the characters and the world.

The main character of the novel is Ye Wenjie, a Chinese astrophysicist who becomes involved with a secret government project to make contact with the alien civilization on Trisolaris. The novel also follows the story of Wang Miao, a nanomaterials researcher who becomes embroiled in a global conspiracy when he begins to receive strange messages from Trisolaris.

The novel deals with a number of complex and thought-provoking themes, such as the nature of human civilization, the dangers of advanced technology, and the possibility of extraterrestrial life. Additionally, it also explores the concept of the “three-body problem” in physics, which refers to the difficulty of predicting the motion of three celestial bodies interacting with each other.

“The Three-Body Problem” was a critically acclaimed and award-winning novel, and it has been praised for its thought-provoking and complex narrative. It was the first in a trilogy, followed by “The Dark Forest” and “Death’s End”, which further explores the universe and the story of the Trisolarans. The novel has been translated into several languages and has gained a large international following.
