Franklin Farms Five: November 6, 2026

Every Thursday night I scour the web for the week’s best essays, articles, editorials, videos and podcasts that speak directly to the Sevenelles. From the hundreds of pieces I harvest, I weigh every one and bring you the finest five in each of the seven elements.

This week I harvested 181 candidate items from 56 sources and selected the 35 best for today’s menu.

Cream of the Crops

The finest find in each of the seven elements

Knowing the Better Way to Live Alone

Live

Knowing the Better Way to Live Alone

The cheeriest thing a Zen monk ever said about a terminal diagnosis: the doctor handing you six months will also die, and might beat you to it. Thich Nhat Hanh isn’t saying death is fine. He’s saying most of us already eat dinner with a ghost in the next chair, the past on one side, the future on the other, while the tea goes cold.

‘Heroes work here’: why I quit being an ER nurse

Anita Lambert came to a Chicago ER in the 1990s with a creed: drag yourself out by your fingernails. Then a coworker mentioned, mid-charting, that the drunk woman spitting at her had been a teacher whose son drowned. The leather restraints come off, and so does the creed. Explains how even compassion worn as armour stops working.

Albert Camus on the Three Antidotes to the Absurdity of Life

Camus in 1945, fresh off a war that made meaninglessness look like policy, declining to sell despair. His prescription is unglamorous: be frank, be free, feel some justice around you. A philosopher of the absurd who hedges his own answer is rarer than the absurd itself.

Reasons Why I Still Need You, a Werewolf, to Come into the Office During the Full Moon

Gary’s bad knee flares on the same dates as your transformation, and not once has it eaten anyone. That’s the HR standard. The real cruelty is procedural: a notarized Certificate of Lupine Incapacitation, $10,400, six to eight weeks. Anyone who has requested an accommodation will laugh, then quietly check whether they’re the werewolf or Gary.

Why Immigration Agents Don’t Quit in Protest

Francisco Cantú used to wear the uniform, so he gets the quote no reporter would: a Latino agent who yelled at a coughing mother, handed out food, yelled again, then went home and cried. ‘You see these people like cattle.’ He still works as an agent. The distance between the crying and the next shift is the whole question of what a job does to the person doing it.

What a Mother Can Hold

What a Mother Can Hold

Her son wore a lamb costume the night before her diagnosis, and she lets the obvious thought land. Then she spends the rest unlearning a creed: that loving him enough means absorbing his grief before it reaches him. She heard she’d been on placebo while standing beside Guanyin in a museum, and later admits she misread that, too.

Trial, Triumph, and the Art of the Possible: The Moving Story Behind Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy”

Schiller died sure his Ode was a failure, fine for a handful of readers ‘but not for the world.’ One of the handful was a teenage Beethoven, who carried it through war, deafness, a legal fight over his nephew, and, at fifty-two, a morning walk that ended in jail. Schiller never found out. That’s the part worth sitting with.

🧵 Thread of the Week

‘5 Ways to Manage Moral Injury, When our Values Clash with Our Actions’ treated the gap between conscience and paycheck as a wound you could tend. In ‘Why Immigration Agents Don’t Quit in Protest’, former border patrol agent Francisco Cantú describes officers acculturated to see migrants as entirely unlike them, and an agent who cries after treating people like cattle and then goes back to work, which suggests the injury is perfectly manageable, and that this is exactly the problem.

🪱 The Compost Heap

Astra can read and write weights to improve Qwen

Astra found a weight-level cause for the reasoning loops that Qwen3.5-0.8B’s own model card already warns about, edited 0.016% of the weights, and lifted MATH-500 from 7.9% to 48.1%. That is genuinely neat, and it is also roughly what a good mechanic does with a car whose manual lists the rattle. Getting from there to ‘our neural network weights will soon be natively optimized by LLMs’, with Adam and Muon demoted to ‘tiny symbolic optimizers’, is like fixing one leaky faucet and announcing the end of plumbing. (The title says ‘Sparks’, which is academic for ‘we smelled smoke and called the fire department.’)
